I found these tucked between the pages of an old notebook.
The sting was subtle, like the prick of a rose thorn.
Not the bear trap of emotion I would have expected from an ex-love.
The difference between sticky notes and love letters is that love letters convey a feeling; some form of love, consummate, misguided or unrequited. Still some form of love.
The person who wrote these sticky notes is incapable of love. They used sticky note compliments like bread crumbs to lead me to a belief that this time next year there would be love.
This person claimed to be different from the men I loved before, the only difference is that the men I loved before left me to destroy and rebuild on my own.
This person took all my vulnerabilities and stripped me of all the things I had come to want for myself.
Good-bye dance, Good-bye skyline, Good-bye west coast sunsets, Good-bye community, Good-bye purpose.
This person, when given the chance to be loved unconditionally, turned me into a monster in their narrative. Their own personal villain because pity is the only form of love they understand.
This person is not the villain in my tale, just a human who can not figure out how to heal. This time next year is burning brighter than it ever could have with them in my life.
They made room for real unconditional love.
The difference between sticky notes and love letters is that even though love may wane some form of love existed to be expressed, even if just for a moment. While sticky notes are false promises disguised as compliments.
Also, sticky notes burn too quick to make for good kindling.......
